About Lufthansa Boeing 747-400

Lufthansa is flag carrier of Germany based in Frankfurt. They have 13 747-400s now.

They had many classical 747s in 1980s but they have to retirement going faster. Lufthansa decided to order for 6 747-400 on May 21, 1986. Lufthansa is 7th operators about 747-400. The first aircraft (D-ABVA) delivered on May 23, 1989. They also had some 747-400M combi aircraft past time. All of aircraft are using GE engines.

Normally Lufthansa 747-400s are assignment to long haul routes ex.North American, Middle Eastern, Asian. One of unusual operations on end of 2017. Lufthansa was operated for domesitic flight between FRA and TXL by 747-400. The reason was relief flight due to bankruptcy of Air Berlin.

Lufthansa has planning to retirement for all of 747-400 until 2025. They ordered 777-9X and replacing for 747-400. It expect that all of 747-400 will be retirement when all of 777-9X are finished delivering to Lufthansa.

Lufthansa 747-400 History

May 21, 1986. Lufthansa ordered 6 747-400 (include -400×3 and -400M×3). Final order was in July 31, 2000. Lufthansa introduced total 30 747-400 series until March 15, 2002. 5 of 747-400 did not built but they had registrations and recorded it (D-ABTM, D-ABTN, D-ABTO, D-ABTP)

Current operations

Lufthansa has 13 747-400s now.

All of active aircraft are normal type of 747-400 delivered after 1996. All of aircraft assigned to long haul flight mainly. Lufthansa 747-400 based only in Frankfurt. There is no routes from Munich and Hamburg where hub airport in Germany.

Past time Lufthansa 747-400 assigned for many cities. Lufthansa 747-400 was main aircraft of long haul routes in 1990s and 2000s before they introduced A380 and Boeing 747-8.

Current aircraft

There is 4 747-400 and 8 747-400M, 4 747-400ERF in April 2018.All of active aircraft delivered after 1996 Also all of retirement aircraft delivered until 1992.

There is no 747-400M type on Lufthansa fleet in Summer of 2018. They retired all of aircraft on December 2014. The final combi aircraft was D-ABTF delivered on April 23, 1991.

There are three classes in the cabin. It has 67 Business Class and 32 Premium Economy Class, 272 Economy Class. Lufthansa 747-400 has total 371 seats in the cabin on 2018.
